Falling asleep during hypnosis?

Many clients are finding that they are falling asleep during hypnosis and are wondering how this affects their treatment.

Please be assured that it is very safe and very natural to fall asleep during hypnosis, and this is why....  The state of hypnosis actually exists in between the states of wakefulness and sleep, like the jam that lies in the middle of a sandwich.   You might be interested to know that we naturally pass through the state of hypnosis each time that we fall asleep and each time that we re-awaken, so we are actually going through hypnosis many times.  It simply happens so quickly that often we do not notice it.

Have you ever heard someone talking to you when you are falling asleep and although you are aware that they are talking to you, you are simply far too relaxed to reply?  Have you noticed when the phone rings when you are asleep that you pass through a state where you can hear the phone ringing but you are too relaxed to answer it?  It is very likely that you are experiencing the state of hypnosis.

It is therefore not surprising that many people find that they have fallen asleep during hypnosis - they have simply slipped into the next very natural state to be in.

The art of hypnosis is to stay in the trance state and here's a few tips to help you to do that:

Help to stay awake during hypnosis...

The best way to stay awake is to ensure that you are not too tired and not too comfortable whilst you listen to your therapist or your CD.  Try the following -

  • sit in a chair rather than laying on a couch or settee;
  • try a more upright chair rather than a large comfy one;
  • stay cool - open a window and/or switch off the heating;
  • leave the lights on;
  • try and find time to practise in the morning or other times when you
    are less tired.

Benefits of hypnosis during wakefulness and sleep ...

During sleep, the subconscious part of the mind never actually shuts down  - it is responsible for our dreams and the processing of the experiences that we have had through the day.  The subconscious mind will therefore continue to listen to your therapist's voice during sleep, whether it is in real time, or on a recording and your mind will continue to process this information and bring about the benefits.

However, it is very useful to listen to your session so that your conscious and subconscious mind are working together.

The main benefit of being able to enter into and remain within the state of hypnosis is so that you can recognise the enjoyable state and practice bringing it about whenever you want to, or whenever it is useful to you.

Practise your 'Anchor'...

During your session, you may have been asked to think of an 'anchor' - a word or action that brings about the relaxing state of hypnosis - continue to practise this - say or do your anchor and allow your body to relax.  This may take more thought at first and becomes easier with practice.  Allow your shoulders to drop, concentrate on your breathing and feel your body relax... becoming more and more relaxed with each breathe that you take.... and relax....

Hypnosis is like a muscle - if you continue to practice, it becomes easier and much more powerful.

Using Hypnosis to fall asleep ...

As the state of hypnosis is so close to the state of sleeping, using hypnosis at bedtime can be a very effective and a wonderful way of drifting off to sleep instead of allowing anxieties and stressors to keep you awake.   The more that you practise this, the easier it will become.

  • make sure you are comfortable and safe
  • close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing ...
  • notice how enjoyable it is to allow your muscles in your body to simply relax ...
  • allow irrelevant thoughts to simply drift into and out of your mind ...
  • don't wait for sleep to come, simply enjoy the relaxation ...
  • take the steps down your staircase, becoming more and more deeply relaxed with each step that you take ...
  • enjoy your special place, notice the colours ... and the textures ... the sounds ... and perhaps the smells that exist in this safe place of yours, where no-one needs anything from you ... and relax ...

If you have something on your mind that you cannot shake off, get up and write it down, taking it out of your head and leave it on a piece of paper, from where you can deal with it in the morning.  Return to your place of sleep and try again, as above ...
